Are you planning a hike with your four-legged buddy? Or, do you want to make your regular walk with your furry buddy a bit more challenging?
Then a dog saddle bag or a dog backpack would be the best thing for you!
Hiking becomes a lot more adventurous with a dog saddlebag, as it gives your doggo some extra weight to carry and makes it a challenging job for them.
Don’t worry, your pup will be happy for sure, as they like to stay busy and love it when you give them a task to carry out.
Dog saddle bags don’t have much weight, and they suit well even the smallest of your furry buddies. So it doesn’t matter what the size of the pack is. You can let them carry their own bowls and water bottles. Or, you can just let your doggo get used to the feeling of having something on their back.
Isn’t it that it will make them tired on their regular walks, and they will feel satisfied thinking that they have contributed to something.
So, how can you choose the best dog saddlebags? Which are the most popular ones available in the market?

#1. Mountainsmith K-9
The Mountainsmith K-9 has everything that you want in a pack!
You can put it on your doggo with ease.
The striking feature about this saddlebag for dogs is that you don’t need to place your pup’s legs into the harness like most other packs. Instead, all you need to do is slide the saddlebag over your pup’s head and buckle around the legs and chest. I put it on my doggo, and he didn’t even mind.
The manufacturers have put a lot of thought into the design to ensure the adjustments from almost all directions. You can change the chest strap’s length according to your preference on the front of the pack. You get to do this even if you have a large breed of dog.
The panniers come with straps too. Depending on the girth of your canine buddy, you get to lower as well as raise each pannier.
Did I tell you that the straps are contoured and padded too?
It gives your pup a comfortable and snug fit.
All the d-loops and buckles come with fabric backing. It saves your dog’s skin from getting rubbed against the hard plastic parts. So you can rest assured that this backpack will not give your doggo skin rashes or irritation. Also, you can adjust them easily, without weighing them down.
If you want to store a lot of things, know that this saddle bag for your dog has a lot of pockets. It lets you keep your pup’s gear with ease. You can store two liters of water and food in the two large pockets.
And you can store treats, first-aid kits, and waste bags in the smaller slash pockets.
Did I tell you that the Mountainsmith K-9 is made with 630D and 420D nylon?
Also, it has secured stitching and rugged zippers on the leash attachment and the handle.
Pros:
- It comes with an adjustable harness to provide your doggo with a custom fit
- It has a padded handle
- The single belly strap is adjustable
- On the chest, there are four attachment points
- To provide you with easy storage, it has zippered pockets and two compartments
- The padded sternum strap is comfortable for your pup
Cons:
- It doesn’t come with a neck buckle, which makes the task of putting it on your doggo and then removing it – time-consuming
#2. RUFFWEAR Approach
Approach from the house of RUFFWEAR is perfect for days when you want to go on a long day hike with your doggo.
It comes with one-piece construction. The panniers of the saddlebag are sewn into the frame of the harness.
I am in love with the design as the leash attachment is durable, and the zippers are rugged. And the handle is sewn securely into the bag.
The two panniers are pretty spacious. You can store dog bowls, waste bags, treats, and two liters of water in them. The straps are comfortable, as it comes padded. You need to buckle them across your dog’s abdomen and chest.
A flap of fabrics does its job well to protect your pup’s skin from rubbing against the buckles. Durable 420D ripstop nylon is used to make the RUFFWEAR Approach. Also, on the inside part, there is a soft liner.
Two attachment points are there in the RUFFWEAR Approach. One is a fabric loop, and the other one is a long-lasting metal ring. I like the gear loops that you can find across the top. Those are great for storing the leash when you decide not to use it.
And you don’t have to worry about storage, as there are plenty of pockets in the pack.
Although this dog backpack is rugged, it is less adjustable compared to the others in the market. You only get to adjust the strap length and how snugly they fit across your pup’s chest. But you can’t change the pouches’ height as they come sewn into the pack’s underlying fabric.
Coming to the rear strap, it sits far back on your dog. This increases the chances of it getting sprayed with their urine. And that is not a good thing. Right?
Pros:
- You can get it in five different sizes
- The saddlebags are form-fitting
- For increased visibility, it comes with reflective stripes
- It is great for outdoor adventures with your favorite doggo
- The distribution of weight is even
- It is lightweight and comfortable
Cons:
- Some dogs may find it hard to balance
- The straps are not padded and can be uncomfortable for your doggo when they get rubbed under your pup’s armpit
#3. Kurgo Baxter
Are you looking for a lightweight saddlebag for your four-legged friend?
Then this dog backpack from the house of Kurgo can be the one!
It offers the right balance between functionality and price. You will get all the basic features that a dog backpack must have –without exaggeration.
You can easily put this backpack on your doggo – all thanks to the clip at the front!
So, you don’t need to move your pup’s feet. Just secure the buckle at the front after sliding the harness over their head. It’s that easy!
Two straps fit perfectly across your pal’s chest. It’s ideal for securing the saddlebag to your doggo.
The manufacturers have made each and every strap adjustable to give your doggo a snug fit.
The only thing that puts me off is that the straps are not padded, unlike the other backpacks for dogs in the market.
Moreover, the buckles lay flat against the skin of your pup, and you have to be very careful while using them. Otherwise, the buckles and the straps can irritate your pup’s skin.
The Kurgo Baxter comes with two spacious panniers. Each has a slash pocket for smaller items and a large pouch for bigger items. You get to store food, water, and treats for your dog in them.
Did I tell you that you can adjust the panniers?
So you can move it up and down to fit the size of your dog.
Isn’t that amazing?
If you go for the Big Baxter pack, you will be able to store 7.5L of gear, and it will fit pups that weigh more than 50 pounds.
And if you go for the regular Baxter pack, you get to store items of 3.75 L. It will fit pups that weigh between 30 and 85 pounds.
The Kurgo Baxter doesn’t come with much fluff. You get what you see.
The harness is contoured and padded lightly to fit your dog’s back. For the leash, there are two attachment points. If you look at the front chest strap, you will find a metal clip along with a bottle opener. Then the other metal clip faces the rear on the handle. I, personally, used only the metal clip on the handle.
Also, the Kurgo Baxter comes with two loops on the top to make it easier for you to attach gear.
Pros:
- It comes with two big saddlebags
- Ensuring full comfort, it features a padded sternum
- To offer you utmost control, there is a sturdy handle on the back
- It comes with 8 points adjustments, meaning it will fit almost all dogs
- To provide you with enhanced nighttime visibility, there are reflective strips on it
Cons:
- I found the size chart to be inaccurate
- The straps are not that long-lasting. The chances of it getting slipped off are high
#4. Lifeunion Dog Saddle Bag
This dog saddle bag from the house of Lifeunion Dog falls somewhere between the rugged Approach backpack from Ruffwear and the cost-efficient backpack Outward Hound DayPak.
Like the Ruffwear Approach pack, this too, comes with fixed panniers sewn into the pack’s body.
You will have to adjust the straps on the chest of the Lifeunion Dog Saddle to fit the size of your pet buddy. But you can’t lower or raise the panniers to perfectly fit your pup. That’s something putting down.
The shape of the panniers is triangular. They are wide at the top.
You can use the dog saddlebag at a campground or during your pup’s regular activities. You get to store only essentials in it – forget big bottles of water or large bags of food.
The Lifeunion Dog Saddle Bag is ideal for day use. However, it is not a minimal pack. The straps and the bag are lined using a soft mesh. Also, they padded very well to provide your doggo with comfort.
Did I tell you that the Lifeunion Dog Saddle Bag is made of 600D double polyester, which is water-resistant?
Also, it features a rubber handle to offer you a non-slip and secure grip.
Pros:
- To provide you with some extra storage space, it comes with pockets on each side
- The back material is breathable and padded
- It’s completely waterproof and long-lasting – perfect for hikes
- It is made from premium quality polyester material
- The handle is padded with rubber
- There are reflective strips on it that improve the visibility at night
Cons:
- The sizing chart is not accurate
- The size of the saddlebags may not be ideal for carrying big loads. However, it can carry lighter loads
#5. Outward Hound Daypak
Do you want to gift your doggo a convenient and lightweight backpack?
Have a look at the Outward Hound Daypak!
It is not only lightweight but cost-effective too. And you can store all your extra essentials in it while exploring outdoor with your furry buddy.
The Outward Hound Daypak comes with four compartments for storage.
Did I tell you that you can expand the compartments too?
On each side, there are two compartments. This distributes the weight evenly without putting any extra pressure on your doggo.
In addition, you get to store water, training accessories, food, and even more.
The backpack is made with mesh fabric that is breathable. It lets your doggo stay cool even when the temperature is hot outside. This is to keep your pup comfortable all the while. You can adjust the straps to make it fit your buddy well.
You can choose the Outward Hound Daypak in different bright colors. This increases visibility, keeping you worry-free – be it day or night.
You can choose the size of the backpack according to the size of your doggo. All you need is to measure your pup’s girth and place your order according to that.
As the name suggests, the Outward Hound Daypak is ideal for walking on the beaches, parks, and streets. However, it is not that rugged to use for traveling through rough terrain.
Pros:
- It is made from breathable and cool mesh material
- You get a D-ring leash attachment with it
- It is a high-quality dog backpack
- In order to provide your dog with a secure and tight fit, it comes with belly straps that are adjustable
- The reflective feature makes it more visible at night
- For storage, it comes with four expandable pockets
Cons:
- Does your dog like to pull? Then it is not for you
- Again, the size chart is not correct
- It can be hard to balance at times, as it doesn’t stay at its place all the while
#6. OneTigris HOPPY CAMPER Doggy Backpack 2.0
The brand OneTigris is quite popular for its tactical backcountry gear.
Coming to the OneTigris HOPPY CAMPER Doggy Backpack 2.0, it is more like a casual bag for your pup. You can rely on it.
Do you like sleek and modern design bags?
Then you are going to love the OneTigris HOPPY CAMPER Doggy Backpack for sure!
It is 19.7oz and made using cotton canvas. This backpack for your doggo is on the heavier side.
Now, if you compare cotton with other pack materials such as polyester and nylon, you will see that cotton is less durable and takes more time to dry. It’s a drawback if your hiking route involves river crossings or planning to hike on a rainy day.
The stitching of the handle is very good but not enough to lift your dog.
Now, do you want a backpack that you can use to lift your doggo up a boulder?
Then you might want to give the OneTigris HOPPY CAMPER Doggy Backpack 2.0 a pass and go for something more durable.
When I used this dog backpack, I found it to be sturdy. Also, it stays in its place while your dog runs, hikes, or goes for some adventure.
It is easy to fit the OneTigris HOPPY CAMPER on your pup. You can adjust it by making use of the two straps that it comes with. One strap is placed around the neck, and the other goes over their belly.
Overall, I found the OneTigris HOPPY CAMPER Doggy Backpack 2.0 to be a pretty good day-hike pack for pups. You can get it in multiple sizes and colors.
If you don’t want to use the D-rings, feel free to get rid of them. This will make the pack a bit lighter and make it easier for your furry buddy to put it on when hiking long distances.
Pros:
- It is a multi-functioning backpack for your furry buddy
- It has a classy vintage style
- You get to choose from 3 color options
- For increased breathability, it is made with padded mesh undersides
- It is great for large and medium dog breeds
- It comes with back and front D-rings for leash attachment
- It allows you to store essentials in the semi-open pockets and zipper compartments
Cons:
- You need to balance the side packs really well. Otherwise, they may slip off
- I don’t recommend you to use the handle for lifting your pup.

Mesh material is used to make this pack. This helps keep your doggo cool, even in the hot months of summer.
The straps of the Outward Hound Denver Urban Pack are adjustable. And for easy restraining, it comes with a top handle.
Did I tell you that you get to choose between the two sizes available?
All you need is to measure your pup’s girth and then place your order online according to that.

How to Choose the Best Dog Saddle Bags?
Now that you know what all options you have when it comes to buying the best dog saddlebag, it is time that you pay attention to the following points while getting one:
#1. Load dispersion
If you give an uneven load to your furry buddy to carry, they are not going to enjoy it for sure. In fact, they will be extremely uncomfortable. In some cases, this may even cause an injury to your beloved buddy.
This makes it important for you to look for a dog saddle bag that carries the load evenly on all sides.
The weight should be carried well from front to back.
If a backpack is good, it will definitely offer even capacity on all sides. Also, in order to provide your doggo with solid support, the weight should be closer to their shoulders.
#2. Capacity
The primary use of a backpack is to carry hiking essentials. So, the backpack should be such that it can carry a lot more than just a few waste bags.
If you are looking for a dog backpack or short walks or day hikes, the one with a capacity of 1-2L will work just fine.
However, if you are looking for a dog saddle bag for a more adventurous hike, you will need more space for food, water, and other essentials that the two of you might need.
In that case, a backpack with a capacity of 3-5L will do.
Have you got a beefy dog? Are you planning to go on a trek for multiple days?
Then go for a larger pack.
Some packs in my list can carry loads of up to 25L. Check those!
#3. Weight
Let me tell you the general rule of thumb.
Your pup should not carry a load that is over 25% of their body weight. This number can vary from 10% to 25%, depending on your furry buddy’s fitness level and age.
Not all dog breeds are the same. While some breeds are weak at carrying weight, some are experts.
If your hiking partner is a senior doggo or a puppy, give them lighter loads. Always keep a close look at them while you hike. If they look uncomfortable, you can share some of their loads.
#4. Comfort and fit
The first and foremost thing that you should pay attention to while buying a dog saddlebag is comfort. Your pup should be comfortable putting it on.
Look for features such as mesh material and padded straps.
Padded straps prevent skin irritation in dogs during long hikes. In addition, the mesh material keeps your dog cool even in hot temperatures.
The fit of the dog backpack should be perfect so that your pup doesn’t feel any kind of discomfort during hiking.
#5. Price and value
Try to stick to your budget and buy the dog backpack that fits your requirement.
Generally, the costlier ones come with more features. However, there are many budget options with good features too. I have included them in my list. Have a look.
For a durable, comfortable dog backpack with great features, you might need to spend somewhere between $75 and $100.
You can start with a budget option and then upgrade if you want some more features.
So, which of the best dog saddlebags are you going to get for your furry buddy?
