Crates can also be airline-approved for your dog to travel via plane with you, although this often won’t be in the cabin due to the size and weight of larger crates.

1. PawHut Folding Design Heavy Duty Metal Dog Cage – #Top Pick!
The PawHut Folding Design Heavy Duty Metal Dog Cage is a metal wire cage – with a difference, well, a few differences over the standard metal wire cage. Firstly, each bar has been securely welded to the frame, which gives extra stability to the structure. The bars feel exceptionally sturdy, with little-to-no give when pulled or manipulated.
There is a large front door for dogs to enter and exit easily, which features two safety locks. Another opening on the top of the crate for owners to interact with the dog while inside.
The four rolling wheels allow for easy transportation of the crate, and each wheel has its own built-in brake – often, only two wheels have brakes on these types of crates, so this is a plus. The wheels can also be removed with ease if desired.
As the PawHut Dog Crate is foldable, it is incredibly convenient to store or travel with when not being used. I particularly liked the removable plastic tray that can be taken entirely out and hosed down or wiped clean.
There is one color option, dark gray, but three different sizes to choose from; Option 1: 37-in x 22.75-in x 27.25-in, Option 2: 43-in x 28-in x 30.75-in, Option 3: 49.25-in x 30-in x 32-in. I am reviewing the largest option, which is suitable for dogs weighing up to 175lb. The space of this crate is generous, and there is great visibility for the dog once inside.
This crate weighs 53 lb, but the fact it’s on wheels means that it is easy to move around inside the home or from inside to outside on a hot day. The materials used in construction are durable, non-toxic, and harmless. There are also no screws or tools needed to build this crate, and maintenance is straightforward – wheel outside, hose down, and you’re done.
2. SMONTER Dog Crate
The SMONTER Heavy Duty Dog Crate features an anti-escape lock and comes in a bite-proof shape. This is an upgraded crate that is for the most destructive dogs out there!
Due to the shape of the crate, dogs cannot stick their mouths out of the bars and are unable to chew their way out. The anti-escape lock is a highly secure lock that sits securely on the sturdy metal door, and due to the design of the bars, dogs are unable to reach this.
You can see and feel how well the steel bars have been welded, there is literally no give, and even the most aggressive chewers will remain contained – of this, I am sure. The surfaces are non-toxic, so if your dog chews or licks, no harm will come to them. If this is an issue for you, I can recommend Lickimats coated with peanut butter – much more appealing than a steel bar to lick!
There are two color options, brown and dark silver, and five buying options; 38-inch, 38-inch Strengthen, 42-inch, 42-inch Strengthen, and 46-inch. I am reviewing the 38-inch Strengthen model, which has an upgraded plug-lock, an escape-proof design, and dimensions of 38-in 26-in x 32-in.
This model comes with a 3-year after-sales service. The Midwest Plush Bed is a recommended add-on, although any extra-padded bed should prevent the floor of this crate from hurting dogs’ paws – the brand claims the floor is comfortable, but it is steel after all.
3. PUPZO Dog Cage Crate
There are plenty of buying options with the PUPZO Dog Cage Crate; 3 sizes, two designs, and three color options. I am reviewing the 42-in (42 x 30 x 37 inches) black, flat-roof crate. On all models, the entire roof lifts to allow for interaction between dog and owner, or to replenish food and water, or just a comforting head rub!
I was surprised at how heavy this crate was, weighing 72lb – without a heavy dog in – but it is pretty easy to maneuver as it is on wheels (2 lockable). The materials are top-quality, so this explains the heavy weight and the durability of this dog crate.
Everything is welded or bolted together, and you can easily see the longevity this will provide. It is easy to assemble and looks aesthetically pleasing, too, – the solid black color fitting in with the interior of many modern homes.
The crate is made of rust and corrosion-resistant steel and can accommodate dogs that weigh up to 110lbs. It is an easy build, but this cage does not fold down or collapse, so when it’s up, it is up! Underneath the crate is a strong pull-out tray that is made of plastic and extremely easy to clean when necessary. The brand offers a 1-year warranty with replacements given for any defects of the crate during that time.
4. ProSelect Empire Dog Cage
I reviewed the medium ProSelect Empire Dog Cage, which has dimensions of 33.75-in x 37-in x 25.13-in. At first look, this cage reminded me of a large parrot cage due to how high it is raised from the floor and the vertical space dogs are provided. This crate is made from 20-gauge steel and reinforced 0.5-in steel tubes – it is extremely strong.
The medium-sized crate is suitable for dogs up to 40lbs; I was unable to obtain the larger size at the time of doing this article. This crate weighs 75.2lb, and the four rotating wheels help with transporting it from room to room; the wheels all have brakes attached. Although this crate is recommended for medium-sized dogs, larger dogs could be accommodated for short periods.
With strong dual latches on the door and strong welds at stress points, this crate is as escape-proof as it could be. There is a hammertone finish which should result in great longevity. The underneath tray is steel, differing from the typical plastic, and quick and easy to clean.
Assembly is simple, and the instructions were easy to follow. Once erect, I couldn’t see how any dog could escape from this crate. For those concerned with the humanity of such a construction, fear not as Dr. Katy Nelson has approved this crate!
5. Haige Pet Your Pet Dog Crate
It is my personal feeling that the Haige Pet Your Pet Nanny Heavy Duty Dog Crate looks extreme, but if the need must, then this is possibly the most secure of all the crates featured. It is made from strong, durable corrosion-resistant steel that has a non-toxic finish. There are two safety locks in place of the typical one. In every sense of the words, this is a heavy-duty crate.
Despite the rigid materials, assembly is relatively simple, taking a matter of minutes. Once it is opened out and fixed with eight screws and the four wheels, it is complete as other locks have been pre-loaded. The wheels are also 360-degrees and lockable. There is a removable tray underneath, which is surprisingly made of plastic but seems tough and durable.
The overall dimensions are 40.6-in x 29.5-in x 37.4-in; interestingly, the space between the metal piping is 2-in, which I found to be rather large, with dogs able to lick in between the gaps with ease. Although this may not be a considerable issue, it may lead to soreness or injuries to the tongue without adequate stimulation over time.
I did like the slat-like bottom of the crate, which has been designed with dogs’ paw comfort in mind. The crate comes with a free bed for the floor, and the brand shines again with its 3-year warranty!
6. KELIXU Heavy Duty Dog Crate
There are three size options with the KELIXU Heavy Duty Dog Crate; Upgraded 38-in, Upgraded 42-in, and Upgraded 46-in. I reviewed the Upgraded 38-in as other models were unavailable at the time of my research. However, the sizes are the only differences, so this review is appropriate for all three options.
The welded parts are unbreakable, and the main construction is made from non-toxic steel that is corrosion-resistant. These crates are upgraded designs aimed towards aggressive and destructive dogs, who aren’t suitable for the more traditional wired crate. The bars are thick and the lock much more secure, and in my opinion, absolutely chew-proof.
There is optimal visibility and ventilation, giving owners and dogs a complete visual of each other from every angle. Underneath is a removable plastic tray, and the crate is on four wheels which are 360-degree rotated with locking casters.
The assembly takes just minutes to complete, and the instructions are easy to follow. There is also a three-year warranty with this crate, although I don’t see how this could ever be needed as the construction is extremely tough and durable.
7. New World Dog Crate – #Budget Option
If you are looking for a strong version of a wire crate, the New World 42 Inch Folding Metal Dog Crate is an excellent choice. It is the same design as the typically wired crate but made from thicker, more durable wire. It is suitable for large dogs up to 90 lb and has dimensions of 42-in x 28-in x 30-in. There is a single entry door that opens from the top to the bottom of the crate.
I like the versatility of this crate, as it is entirely foldable it is easy to transport or store when not in use. There are two heavy-duty slide-bolt latches to lock the door securely. Underneath, a slide-out leak-proof plastic pan takes care of any accidents and protects the floor under it.
This is a no-tool assembly that is simple to do within minutes and the same to collapse. The aesthetics differ from standard wire crates, as the protective e-coat finish is in black, with rounded corners for additional safety.
There is a one-year warranty and a customer service contact center for buyers, or prospective buyers, to gain advice or further information during office hours Monday – Friday.
My Verdict
Short of buying a second-hand lion cage from a zoo, there is probably no crate out there that a highly determined dog has not managed to get himself out of.
Although I have been using similar crates to the New World 42 Inch Folding Metal Dog Crate for decades, for Labradors, Rottweilers, Collies, and Terriers, and in my experience when a dog is raised to feel secure, a crate is invaluable at keeping him safe when you’re not there to – and I haven’t had an escape artist yet! This is probably the crate I would feel most comfortable in buying.
The key is to have mastered the crate training and have the dog’s crate environment appealing. Interactive toys are an excellent way to prevent boredom inside a crate, and a comfortable crate bed can help a dog relax.
